“If this is the price to be paid for an idea, then let us pay. There is no need of being troubled about it, afraid, or ashamed. This is the time to boldly say, “Yes, I believe in the displacement of this system of injustice by a just one; I believe in the end of starvation, exposure, and the crimes caused by them; I believe in the human soul regnant over all laws which man has made or will make; I believe there is no peace now, and there will never be peace, so long as one rules over another; I believe in the total disintegration and dissolution of the principle and practice of authority; I am an Anarchist, and if for this you condemn me, I stand ready to receive your condemnation.”

To all the topics that will be putted forward to celebrate John Cage’s 100th anniversary, I contribute mine: I celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of a remarkable anarchist from Twentieth Century. Remarkable not only because of his stand for the freedom idea, but because of the complex applications of it he allowed himself on his outstanding human life: as sound artist, as musician, as philosopher, as poet, as mycologist. There’s nothing more admirable than the complexity of having no rules. And that, in Cage, is seen and foreseen with depth: “We don’t need government We need utilities. Air, water, energy Travel and communication means Food and shelter. We have no need for imaginary mountain ranges Between separate nations. We can make tunnels through the real ones. Nor do we have any need for the continuing division of people Into those who have what they need And those who don’t. Both Fuller and Marshal McLuhan Knew, furthermore That work is now obsolete. We have invented machines to do it for us. Now that we have no need to do anything What shall we do? Looking at Fuller’s geodesic world map We see that the Earth is a single island, Oahu. We must give all the people all they need to live In any way they wish. Our present laws protect the rich from the poor. If there are to be laws, we need ones that Begin with the acceptance of poverty as a way of life. We must make the world safe for poverty Without dependence on government.” John Cage - Untitled poem from his book “Anarchy”
